CHAPTER EIGHT
Tom looked fresh, heâd had a wash and a shave today, he looked top notch he thought. He was lurking in the car park so no one could see him. Heâd planned every move, every last detail of how he would first meet her. Surely it was time for her to be here now. It was nearly eight oâclock in the morning. The children from the school had started to arrive for breakfast club so he knew his wait was nearly over. Tom sat cracking his knuckles, biting the edges of his grubby fingernails. What was he going to say to her when he finally got his chance to speak to her, would she even want to talk to him after all this time? It was a do or die situation.
A black car pulled up and Tom stood on his tiptoes to get a better look at the driver. His eyes squeezed together tightly, his vision blurred. After focusing for a few seconds, he clocked that it was Francesca. His heart was beating now, his mouth was dry. This was it, showtime. Tom stepped out from the corner of the car park and stood where she could see him, fidgeting, anxious, pulling at his clothes. Francesca looked smart today, a white cotton blouse and a navy knee-length skirt. This was nothing like she used to dress. In her day she was all tits and teeth; sexy mini skirts and low-cut blouses. But she was a teacher now, prim and proper. The sound of her heels clipped on the pavement, getting nearer. He had to say something before she passed him. He stepped forward a little and sucked in a mouthful of air.
âHello there, long time no see âey?â Tom smiled at her, showing his brown stumpy teeth. Francesca paused and turned around slowly.
She squirmed and was about to tell this scruff to piss off out of her way. How dare this junkie come into school grounds begging for money, some people had no shame, no shame at all. She paused and examined him further. Her eyes opened wide, her mouth still open. She knew who he was now, her jaw swung low. She stuttered, heart in her mouth. âTom, what on earth are you doing here?â
Heâd planned his answer all night long and the words came flying from his tongue. âIâve come to see you. Itâs been years hasnât it?â
Francesca gulped and remembered where she was. No way did she want her collar felt for talking to some drug addict in the school car park. She wanted no connection with him whatsoever, he was her past and he was staying there. He reminded her of a time she was trying to forget. She kept her voice low and tried her best to be nice to him. âYes, itâs been a long time, Tom. Why are you here, do you have kids who go to the school?â
This was just friendly talk, nothing more. He was happy now she was having a conversation with him.
